For Artists
To be a successful Artist in the Canadian market, artists of all disciplines have to be empowered with basic to advanced business administration skills, this is where we come in. Contracting in Canada for Artists 101:
- How to create contracts, invoices and receipts that are in accordance with CARFAC rates, and are legally binding within your provinces. This includes how to incorporate a Code of Conduct and best practices into your contract to ensure you remain protected and free from physical and mental harm or injury when working in the arts workplace in accordance with relevant provincial legislation.
- How to create partnership, affiliate,and fundraising agreements when working with other Artists and arts organisations in accordance with applicable Manitoba business laws. Including what to include, and what not to include.
Safe Working Spaces 101:
- How to create a safe working space for yourself in and out of the studio. Including how to work with hazardous materials, how to store supplies and art works in a fire prevention manner, and how to organize your work space and installations so that you remain injury free,. How to set up a fire and emergency plan for yourself and artists you share studio space with.
Arts Customer Service & Sales 101:
- How to develop a customer service and sales policies and procedures manual for yourself. How to manage the customer service and sales process including commission requests, bookings to teach, and exhibitions of your work.
Safe Working Spaces 102:
- How to protect yourself from harassment, discrimination, bullying, and cyber-bullying as an practicing artist and art educator in the arts workplace. Including how to set boundaries, Incident documentation, and Incident Reporting. This workshop curriculum is the Cultural Human Resources Council Maintaining Respectful Workplaces Workshop. Teaching Art 101:
- How to set up, advertise, book, organize, and facilitate an in-person and or online arts workshop. Including how to teach beginner students, students with a learning, physical, and/ or intellectual disability, and art for kids. Learn how to adapt your curriculum to different learning styles using technology and traditional methods to provide innovative, inclusive, and relevant graphic and fine arts content.
Building Your Portfolio & Brand 101:
- How to set up your portfolio using online platforms such as social media and artist agent sites, website hosting sites. Including how to generate income online as a free-lancer by building vlog, blog content through ad sale monetization and subscription based platforms.
For Art Organisations
Artists, are Entrepreneurs with their own legal rights in accordance with Canadian legislation, and contract law. Knowing how to book artists and arts educators respectfully, and how to create a safe workplace once you begin working with them is pivot to the success of your organisation. The following workshop series are presented via webinar, and seminars, or can be booked for cultural conferences and are 2 to 3 hour in length. Organisation's who book the following workshops receive a certificate of completion, as well as attendees in some circumstances. - How to create physically inclusive venues, and spaces for artists, audiences, and arts educators with physical disabilities and/or health conditions. Including recommended adjustments to the facilities you host services in, ensuring safe transport to and from your location, emergency planning recommendations, and more.
- How to create inclusive venues, and spaces for artists, audiences, and arts educators with learning and/ or intellectual disabilities. Including recommended adjustments to the facilities you host services in, ensuring safe transport to and from your location, emergency planning recommendations, and more.
- How to ensure the physical space you have artists, arts educators, audience's, and arts administrators in are physically safe to be in. Including how to ensure your space is safe from trips/ slips/ falls, and other accidental injuries from environmental hazards.
- How to develop an emergency evacuation plan and preventative policy and procedures plan.
- How to train your staff, volunteers, artists, and prepare audiences for emergency evacuations at your venue (including protecting those who are deaf/ blind/ hard of hearing/ and those with physical, learning, or intellectual disabilities and/ or health conditions).
- How to develop and maintain a respectful arts workplace. Under the Respectful Workplaces in the Arts (RWA) banner, CHRC has engaged professional HR experts to train a select group of sector trainers from different disciplines to develop and deliver workshops on Maintaining Respectful Workplaces. Since the trainers come from different parts of the country and the sector, they bring specific expertise and knowledge to these offerings. If you are interested in hosting one of these workshops please contact Lucie D’Aoust at ldaoust@culturalhrc.ca. We are beginning to build up a schedule that will extend from September 2019 to March 2020. For this first pilot year, a limited number of trainers’ fees is being generously covered by the Department of Canadian Heritage.The workshops will be 3 hours in length and adapted to the audience, whether they be employers, workers, artists or a mixed group of 12 – 24 participants. Gathering sister organisations or members or clients for a workshop is strongly encouraged.This is the seeding of a true change in culture - beyond the adopting of policies and signing of codes, important as those are. This is where the RWA motto begins to really resonate: Respect: you’ve got our word.
